Abnormalities in cortical pattern of coherence in migraine detected using ultra high-density EEG

Abstract Individuals with migraine generally experience photophobia and/or phonophobia during and between attacks. Many different mechanisms have been postulated to explain these phenomena including abnormal patterns of connectivity across the cortex. The results, however, remain contradictory there is no clear consensus on nature cortical abnormalities in migraine. Here, we uncover alterations coherence (connectivity) interictal migraineurs presentation visual auditory stimuli rest. We used a high-density EEG system, 128 customized electrode locations, compare inter- intra-hemispheric period from 17 individuals (12 female) 18 age- gender-matched healthy control subjects. During presentations (vertical grating pattern) (modulated tone) stimulation which varied temporal frequency (4 6 Hz), rest, participants performed colour detection task at fixation. Repeated measures analyses-of-variance revealed that, relative controls, exhibited significantly (i) faster performance, (ii) lower alpha-band activity, for both connections, (iii) reduced occurred predominantly frontal clusters sensory conditions, regardless frequency, as well resting-state. stimuli, rest (eyes open), may be associated hyper-responsivity that characteristic processing migraineurs.
